4 Cardio Workouts You Can Do With an Injured Leg

When it comes to exercise, dedication and sticking to a routine are incredibly important. However, suffering a leg injury can oftentimes force you to break that routine or abandon it altogether. Fortunately, there are cardio workouts that can accommodate different injuries, helping you stay fit until you are healed. Here are four cardio workouts that you can do with an injured leg.

Cardio Workouts for Leg Injuries

  • Modified HIIT Training – HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, may sound like it can’t be done with an injury, but this is far from true. Usually involving quick movements for a well-rounded fitness experience, HIIT can include any number of exercises and can be modified to focus on exercises that won’t require the use of your legs.
  • Stationary Bicycle – If your usual cardio comes from outdoor cycling, try a stationary bike. This machine offers a great, low impact cardio workout while helping to strengthen your injured leg. Furthermore, it is something you can do even if you are wearing a cast or a splint.
  • Water Exercises – If you really want to take the pressure off of your joints, exercising in the pool is a great option for cardio. Not only that, but the resistance provided by the water can help build strength in your legs while you are recovering. Water exercises include swimming and water aerobics.
  • Yoga – A slower, yet disciplined cardiovascular exercise, yoga is excellent because it helps to improve strength and flexibility and does not always require standing. For a similar and more cardio-focused exercise, you can also try pilates.
